Whether it is for romance or friendship, Valentine's Day has a way of making us crave companionship, often from loved ones we haven't spoken to in a while. But no matter what the reason, or what time of year, many seniors are using social media to satisfy that craving. Here are some tips to help you do the same.
- The most popular social networking site is Facebook, so that is the best place to start your search. If you want to make a profile on another site, the next most likely place for success is with Instagram. The main difference is that Instagram is just for pictures and videos. On Facebook, you can share pictures, videos, stories, news items, and much more.
- Depending on which one you choose, you can access it on your computer at Facebook.com or Instagram.com. If you prefer using a phone or tablet, it is best to download the app from Google Play, or whichever app store supports your particular device.
- Be assured that both of these applications are very user-friendly. Right from the start, you will see the option to create a new account. The most basic information they need is your full name, email address or phone number, and a password. Be sure to choose one that you can easily remember. The app or website will literally take you step by step through the entire process.
- Once you save your profile, a search box will appear. The most basic way to search for someone is with their first and last name. Type in your loved one's name and you will see a list of results. Scroll through until you see a match, click on the picture, and send a friend request.
But don't just connect with people from the past. Be sure to connect and enjoy 'friending' your grandchildren and others that have been in your life all along.
